Indian Spices Export: Products, Packaging and Shipping

India is widely recognised as the world's largest producer, consumer and exporter of spices. This guide covers what importers typically buy, how spices are packed and what to check before shipping.

Commonly exported Indian spices

Popular export lines include:

  • Whole spices: black pepper, green cardamom, cloves, cinnamon, star anise, nutmeg and mace
  • Seeds: cumin, coriander, fennel, mustard, fenugreek and sesame
  • Roots and dried produce: turmeric, dry ginger, dry red chilli and tamarind
  • Ground spices and blends: turmeric powder, chilli powder, coriander powder and garam masala

Whole or ground?

Whole spices keep their aroma longer and give importers the option to grind locally. Ground spices and blends are ready for retail or food service. Many buyers order a mix of both in one shipment.

Packaging that protects quality

Spices are sensitive to moisture, light and strong odours. Export packing usually uses food-grade, moisture-resistant inner bags inside strong outer cartons or sacks, with clear labels showing the product, origin and exporter. Agree pack sizes and labelling requirements for your market in advance.

What buyers check

Importers commonly ask about cleanliness, moisture and, for many markets, pesticide residues against local limits. Requirements differ by country, so share your market's standards with the exporter before ordering.

In India, spice exporters are expected to register with the Spices Board, the government body that promotes and regulates spice exports. Buyers can ask suppliers for their registration details.

Shipping spices

Because spices are dry and shelf-stable, sea freight is usually the most economical way to ship regular or larger volumes. Air freight works well for samples and small urgent orders. Shipments typically travel with a commercial invoice, packing list, certificate of origin and any certificates your country requires.
