Fresh Fruit Export from India: Process and Requirements

India is the world's largest producer of bananas and mangoes and grows a wide range of tropical fruit. This guide explains how fresh fruit is prepared for export and what importers should confirm before ordering.

Popular Indian fruits for export

Buyers commonly import mango, banana, pomegranate, guava, papaya, sapota (chikoo), coconut and amla (Indian gooseberry), alongside citrus and other seasonal fruit.

Plan around the seasons

Many fruits are seasonal. Mango, for example, is harvested in India mainly from spring into early summer. Share your preferred shipment dates early so your supplier can confirm which varieties will be available.

Sorting and packing

Fruit is picked at the right stage for the journey, then sorted for consistent size and colour and checked for damage. Export cartons protect the fruit from bruising and allow ventilation, and are palletised for air or sea freight.

Air or sea?

Soft or short-life fruit and time-sensitive orders usually go by air. Fruit that holds well over a longer journey, such as coconut, can move by sea in larger volumes at a lower cost per kilo.

Plant-health requirements

Most destinations require a phytosanitary certificate for fresh fruit, and some require specific treatments for certain fruits before they can be imported. Check the rules for each fruit with your plant-health authority or customs broker before ordering.
