Fresh Produce Export Packaging Guide

Good packaging is what keeps fresh produce sellable after a long journey. This guide explains the packing choices buyers can ask for, and why they matter for shelf life on arrival.

Choose packaging for the product, not just the price

Ventilated corrugated cartons suit most vegetables and fruit: they stack well, protect against crushing and let cold air move around the produce. Mesh or net bags are common for hardy items such as onion and potato. Leafy greens and herbs are usually packed in lined cartons or bags that slow moisture loss.

Agree the net weight per pack early — it affects how many packs fit on a pallet, the freight cost per kilo and how easily your customers can resell the produce.

Cooling and temperature

Removing field heat soon after harvest slows ripening and wilting. Different products need different storage temperatures: leafy greens and herbs keep best close to freezing with high humidity, while chilling-sensitive produce such as okra, green banana and some gourds is damaged if kept too cold.

When one shipment carries several products, ask how they will be grouped so that each item travels at a temperature it tolerates.

Palletising and loading

Cartons are stacked on pallets, strapped and corner-protected so they stay stable in the aircraft or container. Air shipments are limited by weight and volume per pallet; sea containers must leave space for cold air to circulate.

Labels to ask for

Each pack usually shows:

  • Product name, and variety or grade if relevant
  • Country of origin
  • Net weight
  • Exporter name and address
  • Lot or batch code, so any issue can be traced

Check your market's labelling rules

Many countries have their own language and labelling requirements for food sold to consumers. If you will retail the produce, share your label requirements or artwork before packing so the exporter can apply them at source.
